Divine Intervention Maybe??

October 22nd, 2008 . by Erin

I find myself in utter dismay as I blog at 3:30 in the morning. So the saga continues! As most of you have either read or know first hand, my friend Katy and I have been searching for housing since early August (even separate from each other) but to no avail.

We have received excuses ranging from ‘we are turning this into guys housing this year’. ‘I’m sorry, we want to sell the place with the market being so unpredictable so we aren’t going to be renting to tenants this year’ to ‘sorry, we decided to turn this into married housing’… whatever.

The weird thing about that is (and I love Provo for this) because the vast majority of my friends are guys; I can’t even sleep on my guy friend’s couches when I have nowhere to go. My friend Katy having mostly guy friends as well has been met with the same problem. We have had place after place after place fall through until now. One of my friends (who was living in girls housing mind you) decided to give up his place so that the two of us could have somewhere to live. Nice guy right? He told me he already had somewhere to go and that everything was ok and ironed out, or else Katy and I would never have even presumed to take this apartment, but we did. Everything was ok until 2:45 this morning when I get not only a call from his mom (that owns ‘said’ apartment) letting us know very bluntly that we were violating BYU housing rules (???? I know BYU housing rules inside and out and there is and or was no violation) but that we had until 9:30 (approx 5 hours from now) to get out and find something else!!

Up until now I have been trying to cry but my tear ducts seem to be too proud. Luckily laughter won out so Katy and I have just spent the last hour or so laughing our butts off about the situation. So the saga continues….

I wonder if it is just time to get out of Utah and never look back. After searching Craigslist, KSL, BYU housing website, the WILK board, UVU housing, the ads in the paper and even walking up and down streets in the greater Provo, Orem, Springville, Lindon, and Pleasant Grove area only to come up with nothing. It’s time to start thinking of other options.

Erin, why are you still in Utah County? You need to get out of the BYU housing zone. What about AF or Lehi even?

I’m so sorry. That completely sucks.

yeah i left Utah too. cause it is not so good. but for some reason people all seem to flock to the provo area. i find it strange myself.

i personally encourage all friends of mine to vacate the area. go some place nice… like Atlanta, or Portland. or even California. at least in those places you can fina housing, even if it is expensive.

I’ve figured it out for you! The D.C. area has a great singles scene, many employment opportunities, good schooling, and tons of housing with no BYU regulations! Not to mention beautiful scenery and lots of history to explore. There is also this great family that is moving to the area in December and they have cute kids and the mom has dance parties regularly (with the cute kids).

Of course you could go abroad!

I faced a similar problem when I started looking for a place last year. I learned that the thing to do is give as little information up front as possible and ask to see the place.

When you go to see the place, and before they tell you it’s for marrieds only, start thanking them for giving you a chance and talk about how so many landlords wouldn’t rent to you because you’re not married - which is actually illegal - and that they are really cool for letting you check the place out.

They’ll feel like total douche bags after that if they don’t let you rent from them. After you said the thing about it being illegal they’ll second guess themselves and let you sign on the spot.

    Worked perfectly.

Seriously, time to get out of Provo. I lived there for four years - enough time to know that I have had enough!

Oh, and I wish my dear ducts were proud. Unfortunately, I have been boo hooing all day - so thanks for the comment on my blog earlier today. It helped!

Sweet, a new blog stalker! You’re like, my second one and I’ve been doing this for 8 years now! :P

You could become squatters you know. They have rights! I don’t know what they are, but I’m sure the ACLU would be happy to tell you.

Maybe you could homestead on Cougar Field? Homesteaders have rights, too!

I should take a stand! I think bailing is a more formidable option…

Thanks mom for letting me have my room that isn’t my room because you have an exchange student in it.

Who the hell calls someone at 2:45 in the morning to tell them they cannot live in your apartment? Seriously??

That sucks though. I hope you guys are able to find something soon!
